William SchmidtWilliam Schmidt joined Kansas Legal Services in 2016 to manage cases for the Kansas Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and became Clinic Director January 2017. Previously, he worked on pro bono tax cases for the Kansas City Tax Clinic, the Legal Aid of Western Missouri Low Income Taxpayer Clinic and the Kansas Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. He worked for seven tax seasons providing research at the Tax Institute at H&R Block, also worked in their expatriate division, and has written tax memos on the domestic production activities deduction or the research credit for corporate taxes as a legal intern.

William is licensed to practice in Kansas, Missouri, the U.S. District Courts for the District of Kansas and Western Missouri and the U.S. Tax Court. He has also practiced in areas of family law, bankruptcy, business law, and estate planning/probate. In 2012, he was awarded the Kansas Bar Association Pro Bono Award.

Mr. Schmidt has a Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Missouri – Kansas City and his J.D. is from Washburn University School of Law. During those degrees, he was a legal intern for 4 separate legal clinics. He co-authored a chapter for the ABA 2-volume publication “Effectively Representing Your Client Before the IRS” and writes monthly blog posts on designated orders from the U.S. Tax Court for the Procedurally Taxing website.
